Looking for a truly immersive wilderness experience? Look no further than the Jewel Basin Hiking Area! Spanning over 15,349 acres, this hidden gem boasts 27 pristine lakes and nearly 50 miles of hike-only trails, making it easy to understand why it is called the Jewel.
As you explore the trails, keep an eye out for mountain goats, a common sight in the area. Remember to be mindful of your impact. Even seemingly small actions like leaving waste or urinating along the trail can attract them and significantly affect local ecology and wildlife. The only restroom facility is at the Camp Misery Trailhead so plan accordingly.
The Jewel Basin is also home to many other animals, including deer, elk, moose, black bears, and grizzly bears. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the over 130 bird species that have been recorded in the area.
The most spectacular feature of the Jewel Basin Hiking Area is its multitude of alpine lakes, perfect for a refreshing dip or some trout fishing. Campers can take advantage of the pristine wilderness and spend the night under the stars, surrounded by breathtaking scenery.
Bear in mind that the Jewel Basin is a wilderness area, open from early June through late September, so it’s crucial to come prepared with proper gear and respect the environment by following Leave No Trace principles. Additionally, as the area is home to bears, be very Bear Aware.
