Any trip through Helena deserves a little time for exploration. Born from the 1864 gold strike at Last Chance Gulch and named Montana’s territorial capital in 1875, Helena became known as the “Queen City of the Rockies.” Today, its grand architecture and museums offer a glimpse into Helena’s past, while surprises like the unbelievably good Cajun food at Café Zydeco remind you that Helena isn’t just about history.
When you are done exploring Montana’s capital city, head west on MT-12 to MT-141, pausing for a soak at Broadwater Hot Springs, a local favorite for unwinding under big skies. From there, wide valleys lead you to Helmville, home of the legendary Copper Queen Saloon. This hole-in-the-wall serves steaks straight from Mannix Ranch and hosts the annual Old Salt Festival, celebrating ranching and regenerative agriculture.
Next up is Ovando, a tiny town with outsized character. At Trixi’s Antler Saloon, cash is king, and across the street the Blackfoot Commercial Company doubles as a general store and gallery – save some time to linger over the pottery inside. Pro Tip: Ovando makes an excellent base for a fishing trip on the Little Blackfoot River.
Continuing on, MT-83 threads through the Seeley–Swan Scenic Corridor, beautiful in every season but especially in fall when the leaves blaze red and gold. A 3.3-mile hike to Holland Lake Falls rewards you with cascading water and a view of Holland Lake below. In Condon, stop by Swan Valley Connections to learn about the valley’s bear population and conservation efforts, then swing into the Mission Mountain Mercantile, the only place to fuel up between Clearwater and Swan Lake. Locals rave about the Reuben (arguably the best in Montana), and the shelves are packed with curated finds that make this little outpost feel like it has everything a foodie needs to thrive in the wild.
As MT-83 winds north, the Flathead National Forest invites detours down mountain roads, where alpine lakes and river overlooks reward those willing to explore. Do plan ahead: many routes require high-clearance vehicles or change with the seasons, and brush up on your Leave No Trace and Bear Aware principles. Back on the highway, it’s just a short drive to your basecamp in Bigfork.
