The Roadside Geology series originated in 1972 with Roadside Geology of the Northern Rockies. Fourteen years later, the Big Sky portion of that book was updated to become Roadside Geology of Montana, a bright-yellow field guide that soon graced bookshelves across the state.
Nearly 50 years later, Dr. Don Hyndman (UM-Missoula) and Dr. Rob Thomas (University of Montana Western) completed the second edition of that iconic book, which recently received the High Plains Book Award in the Science and Medicine category. The new book, a second edition in name only is in color with all new maps, cross sections, diagrams, photographs and road guides.
This talk will include the process of making Roadside Geology of Montana, 2nd Edition, and a brief overview of Montana geology from the Archean to the present, including that of the Swan Valley!
