SUMMARY:Firesafe Flathead Lunch & Learn at FVCC
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Paul Hessburg is a Senior Research Ecologist with 48 years of experience in forestry\, fire\, forest pathology\, and landscape ecology research. He is the 2022-2026 President of the Association for Fire Ecology\, and Professor with the UW-School of Environmental and Forest Science\, and OSU – College of Forestry (Affiliated Faculty). Paul’s research explores wildfire and climate change effects on the dynamics of large landscapes\, the structure and organization of historical\, current\, and future landscape resilience\, decision support modeling for large landscape management applications\, and the ecology of forest reburning. He holds a PhD from Oregon State University and a BS from the University of Minnesota. Paul retired in late 2024 after 42 years with the PNW Research Station and continues his research and development under his affiliate appointments and a recently formed LLC. \n  \n(please note: flyer incorrectly states Wednesday\, and should state Tuesday)

DESCRIPTION:Award winning watercolor artist Karen Leigh has taught at FVCC (Flathead Valley Community College) for over 53 years\, inspiring thousands of sutdents over the years.  She has studied with some of the leading masters in the discipline.  Always on the lookout for ‘accidental magnificence\,’ Karen is particularly interested in finding beauty in unexpected places. \nEveryone is invited to attend the exhibition opening reception in the Wachholz College Center’s Wanda Hollensteiner Art Gallery on Wednesday\, January 21 from 5-7pm. Following the opening event\, the exhibition will be available for viewing to the public through March 27. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9am-1pm as well as during WCC showtimes for patrons with tickets to WCC performances. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Citizens for a Better Flathead will be celebrating 32 years and hosting its annual Great Place Raffle Party on May 17th from 6:00-8:30 PM at Flathead Valley Community College (this event is not endorsed by FVCC). Join us at Flathead Valley Community College\, Arts and Technology Building\, downstairs Rm 139. \nThere will be a catered dinner by the House of S & M\, a no-host bar provided by Waters Edge Winery\, and door prizes\, time to visit with friends and hear briefly about some of the work we are doing. \nThe event is open to the public\, and we hope you will join us as we celebrate our 32nd year and the wonderful community support that makes our work possible. Raffle tickets will be available for sale at the start of the evening\, but we encourage you to go online at https://www.flatheadcitizens.org to see the list of 25 great prizes and to purchase your raffle tickets before the event. Tickets are $25 each or five for $100. \nCitizens for a Better Flathead (CBF) works to foster informed and active citizen participation in the decisions shaping the Flathead’s future and to champion the democratic principles\, sustainable solutions\, and shared vision necessary to keep the Flathead special forever. Since 1992 we have been working to secure policies that will keep the Flathead the place we love as it changes and grows. Since 1992 the population of the Flathead Valley has almost doubled from 62\,949 to over 110\,000 today\, which has brought a lot of change. How the Flathead grows is important to all of us. This event is an informal opportunity to gather\, celebrate\, and learn a bit more about the work CBF does.

DESCRIPTION:You are invited to participate in a community meeting addressing Population Change\, Aging & Vulnerability to Wildfire in the Flathead Valley on July 13\, 8:30-10:30am at the Flathead Valley Community College\, Arts and Technology Building\, Room 139. Refreshments will be provided. \nRecent population changes in the Flathead Valley have the potential to increase peoples’ vulnerability to wildfire. Professor and Demographer\, Richelle Winkler\, will summarize new data from Census 2020 and recent migration data\, explaining and mapping how and where population is changing across Flathead County and the implications for wildfire vulnerability. Participants will then be asked to participate in small group discussions about wildfire vulnerability and strategies to reduce risk in the region. Information that participants share will be used to guide research addressing wildfire vulnerabilities and practices to reduce risk. Participants will also have an opportunity to build networks and share information with service providers\, community leaders\, planners\, and emergency responders from across the Flathead Valley. \nEveryone is invited. We hope that you will share this invitation with colleagues and anyone else you think would be interested.
